08-09-10 Memo: Information Regarding the Upcoming Sergeant Exam/Assessment Center TOP

We just received important information from Civil Service regarding the upcoming
sergeant exam and assessment center.

The mandatory sergeant’s exam orientation has been scheduled for September 20th at
9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. in the City Council Chambers. Even if you have not signed your
letter of intent yet you should plan on attending one of the two sessions. If you do not
attend you will not be able to proceed in the examination process.

The assessment center date has now been determined for November 13th, 2010 at
Bowie High School. Start time(s) has not been determined and will not be done until we
have a total number of participating candidates.

The 100 Club of Central Texas is a 501(c)(3) non-profit charitable organization providing financial, legal, and emotional support to families of first responders who are killed in the line of duty. The Club also provides resources to enhance first responder safety and welfare by providing life-protecting equipment for law enforcement officers and K9s, firefighters, and EMS personnel. Our area of coverage includes Travis, Hays, Bastrop, Williamson, and Caldwell counties.

The upcoming promotional written exam for the rank of Police Sergeant is being conducted at
the Austin Convention Center. Our office has made arrangements for parking at the Austin
Convention Center Parking Garages for the date of the exam at no charge. Candidates will be
given their parking coupon at the time their exam is graded. The two locations are as follows:

• 201 East 2nd Street - Entrances on Brazos and San Jacinto streets;
• 601 East 5th Street - Entrance on 5th Street, between Red River and Sabine streets.

Additionally, based on the number of candidates, the Convention Center has scheduled us for
Ballroom A. Attached you will find a layout of the first floor of the Convention Center.
Dependant on the candidate’s choice of parking garage best entry into the Convention Center
will vary.

RUN WITH THE HEROES 5K

Bring the whole family to support Austin's finest and raise money for Special Olympics Texas (SOTX) - Central Texas Area! Everyone is invited to participate in our annual "Run with the Heroes" 5k Run/Walk, presented by the Austin Police Department, Southpark Meadows, and Texas MedClinic, on September 12. 

This year's "Run with the Heroes" will honor Austin Police Officer Drew Bolin, EMS Paramedic Tracy Chambers and Austin Firefighter James Glass, all killed in the line of duty.

WHO WE ARE  -  The “Run With The Heroes 5K" is a race with a purpose...It's more than just winning! It was designed to bring communities together with first responders, to honor fallen heroes of emergency services and show support for their families. Emergency Responders, which include Police, Fire, and EMS, are one large family, and each year “Run With The Heroes” honors a fallen brother or sister.
This year, the run will honor three individuals:
Austin Police Department Officer - Drew Bolin
EMS Paramedic - Tracy Chambers
Austin Firefighter - James Glass
In remembrance of our fallen First Responders, one of our own, read more at www.sotx.org.  Their spirit lives on in our hearts.
