APD Chief Art Acevedo Firing of Sgt. Mike Olsen
Austin Police Association Responds
Austin, Texas, November 28, 2007: The Austin Police Association represents over 1500 sworn Police Officers that make up the Austin Police Department. The Association's primary role has been and will always be to ensure that the Officer's rights and due process are intact like any other citizen expects.

The decision made by Chief Art Acevedo today to indefinitely suspend Sgt. Mike Olsen highlights the difficult environment and dangers of being a Police Officer and the split second decisions Officer's make while putting their own lives at risk on a daily basis to protect the lives of citizens we serve.

The Austin Police Association believes the rights of Sgt. Mike Olsen to receive an impartial investigation and fair hearing were violated during this process when a confidential memorandum was released to the media by the City Manager's Office. We believe the Austin Police Department should be an open and transparent Department. However we also believe that the citizens of Austin expect that the civil rights of police officers, like the rights of any other citizen under investigation, must be protected. Because of the release of confidential information by the City Manager's office we do not believe that this was the case in Sgt. Olsen's investigation.

The Austin Police Association is extremely disappointed in the illegal release of confidential information by the City during Sgt. Olsen's investigation. The Austin Police Association adamantly supports Sgt. Mike Olsen's right to pursue the appeal of his indefinite suspension.

11-16-07 APA Board of Directors Update: New re-entry policy for APA members TOP
APA BOARD OF DIRECTORS UPDATE: NEW RE-ENTRY POLICY FOR REJOINING APA MEMBERS
At the September 20, 2007 monthly APA Board of Directors meeting APA President George Vanderhule appointed a committee to create a re-entry policy for officers who choose to drop APA and then re-join. The committee’s proposal was approved by the APA Board at their November 15, 2007 monthly meeting. The Re-entry policy goes into effect January 1, 2008.

Austin Police Association Reentry Process
The Austin Police Association has a legitimate interest in the retention of its membership by preventing officers from simply joining the union for short stints in order to participate in critical decisions, while nevertheless enjoying the benefits of the Union’s representation throughout their employment with the Austin Police Department.

If a member of the Austin Police Association leaves the association by choice and wants to rejoin, the member must write a letter to the Austin Police Association’s President requesting reinstatement and pay a nonrefundable reinstatement fee of $500.00. The APA Board of Directors, at its next scheduled meeting, shall vote on the proposed reinstatement. If the resigned member cannot pay the reinstatement fee in its entirety, he or she can also submit a request to the APA Board of Directors for leniency consideration. In the event the Board should reject the reinstatement the $500.00 will be refunded.
