Reflections of Police Week *
Police
officers get into their uniforms, strap on their guns
and go off to work. They go into the most
volatile of situations - human emotions - of grief, rage,
hatred, fear, greed and sometimes psychosis. Sometimes
they do not come home. They and their families live on
a subtle edge. It's always there in the background, unspoken,
but there.
In 1963, President Kennedy proclaimed May 15th as
National Peace Officers Memorial
Day and the week
surrounding it as National Police Week. Each year people
across the country gather during the week to honor those
who serve their communities through law enforcement and
to remember those who gave the ultimate sacrifice.

Fly Your
Flag at Half-Staff on May 15, 2004
To commemorate Peace Officers Memorial Day, flags on
all government buildings will fly at half-staff on May
15th. This rare tribute-the only other regularly scheduled
day that flags fly at half-staff is Memorial Day-honors
law enforcement officers who died while protecting the
lives and freedoms of others.
Remember to lower the flags that fly at your home, agency,
or business on May 15th to commemorate Peace Officers
Memorial Day and encourage those in your community to
do the same.
Police Officers Prayer
Lord I ask for courage ~
Courage to face and conquer my own fears...
Courage to take me where others will not go...
I ask for strength ~
Strength of body to protect others,
Strength of spirit to lead others...
I ask for dedication ~
Dedication to my job, to do it well,
Dedication to my community, to keep it safe...
Give me, Lord, concern for those who trust me,
and compassion for those who need me...
And please, Lord, through it all,
be at my side...
